How to choose?
I have always been an animal person but am having a hard time picking a breed for our family. So I was wanting to get some opinions.

I am in love with the Akita, think they are absolutely beautiful. I even tried rescuing one. Though she had not been socialized. She was over 2years old and with my location I did not have a trainer that could help me socialize her safely.  Being my only experience I'm worried an Akita is not a good dog for a family with children and cats, etc.

Sooo I was hoping I could get opinions from others about what is a good family dog.  I like large/medium sized dogs.  I am hoping to find a dog that is not strongly prey driven, does really well with children, can go camping with me, does good off the leash(wouldn't wander away).

I have found a single dog so far that may fit this but they are very uncommon in the US.

I really appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

RE: How to choose?
From what I have read it does not look as if they are good for family with kids http://www.dogsearcher.com/dog_breeds/dog_breed_display.php?if_id=9

but with that being said I have met some of the best behaved Akitas before so I think it really depends on your ability to train and command a dog.
